DNV Confirms Ransomware Attack Impacting 1,000 Ships

Classification society DNV is confirming that a recent ransomware cyber attack on its fleet management software has impacted around 1,000 ships.
The cyber attack was discovered on the evening of Saturday, January 7, on its ShipManager fleet management and operations platform, forcing the class society to shut down the software’s IT servers.
DNV now confirms that 70 customers and a total of 1,000 vessels are affected by what it says was a ransomware attack.
There are no indications that any other software or data by DNV is affected and the server outage does not impact any other DNV services. All users can still use the onboard, offline functionalities of the ShipManager software.
“DNV experts are working closely with global IT security partners to investigate the incident and to ensure operations are online as soon as possible. DNV is in dialogue with the Norwegian police about the incident,” DNV said in its update today.
According to DNV’s website, more than 7,000 vessels owned by 300 customers use its ShipManager and Navigator port and crew management software solutions. The ShipManager platform contains modules providing customers with insight into technical, operational and compliance aspects of ship management data, including planned maintenance system (PMS), shipping procurement, ship safety management systems (QHSE), crew management system, hull integrity management, dry-docking and ship repair and shipping data analytics.
“We apologize for the disruption and inconvenience this incident may have caused,” DNV said.
