PIKE COUNTY, Ill. (KHQA) — The Griggsville-Perry School District in Pike County, Ill., has been the victim of ransomware hackers who are holding files hostage in return for a ransom.
While administrators and staff deal with the fallout, schools in the district will dismiss early on Thursday and Friday. Shuttle busses will run at noon, and dismissal will be at 12:15 p.m.
The early dismissal comes after the district had already canceled classes on Tuesday and Wednesday to try resolve the issues.
The district provided an update to staff, students, and the community through a message on a Facebook post on Wednesday night:
As you know, GP Schools have been having issues with our networks. The fact is that we were the victim of ransomware hackers. The hackers are holding files "hostage" in return for a ransom. This is a growing problem for K-12 schools across the nation (Albuquerque, NM, schools were hit about week early than we were).
Our techs have been working through the weekend and on these last few days to make sure our systems are "clean" and ready to use. They have assured me they are.
However, many files that teachers use are gone at this point. Some will be retrievable. Some will not be. That will make it difficult for teachers to plan and deliver instruction. In addition, we will have network problems as we go along that will need addressed. That will all take time.
Therefore, GP Schools will dismiss early on Thursday and Friday to give staff time to take inventory, create new materials, and make new plans. Shuttle buses will run at Noon, and dismissal will be at 12:15. At the end of Friday, we will reassess and see what we need to do going forward. This is a bumpy situation, and we will occasionally need to "call an audible" and be flexible in what we do.
We thank you for your support in all of this. It's been a crazy time! This just made it a little crazier, but together we can make it through
