Lojas Renner: company suffered a ransomware attack that affected the functioning of e-commerce (Marcos Gouveia/Renner/Disclosure)

A Renner suffered a ransomware attack on Thursday, 19, which took down the company’s e-commerce system. The company confirmed the attack in a material fact disclosed to the market.

According to the company, the attack “resulted in unavailability in part of its systems and operation”, but that this did not affect the functioning of the physical stores.

“Right now, the Company is acting diligently and focused on mitigating the effects caused, with most operations already re-established and it was verified that the main databases remain preserved”.

According to the NeoFeed portal, databases would have been encrypted and criminals would be demanding a ransom for the information.

Ransomware attacks are a type of cyber criminal activity that “hijacks” a user’s or a company’s computer systems and networks, rendering them unusable. The bandits then ask for a financial transfer for the release of the machines (hence the name ransom, which in English means the amount paid to free someone from captivity).

Many experts do not recommend paying for these attacks, as there is no guarantee that computers will be released. Despite this, this type of criminal activity has become increasingly common, with crooks targeting victims with cyber insurance policies and huge volumes of sensitive consumer data.

It was such an attack that victimized, for example, the American operations of JBS in May. The company later confirmed that it had paid an $11 million ransom to hackers to retrieve the information.
