Friday, June 25, the Bordeaux-Gironde Chamber of Commerce and Industry was the victim of a cyberattack by "ransomware". System firewalls helped prevent data leakage
The Bordeaux-Gironde Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) was the victim of a cyberattack on Friday, June 25. Its firewall system prevented the data leak, but network access was blocked. The elected consular officials filed a complaint and refused to pay the hacker with "ransomware", a ransom demand against the release of the network.
“When we turn on the computer, we see that nothing is working and we say to ourselves that it is a network failure,” explains the CCI. The IT department investigates and finds it to be a cyber attack. The hacker sent an email explaining that, to hope to recover access to the system's data, you have to start financial negotiations by replying to such and such an address. “We do not respond, we file a complaint and we appeal to the competent authorities and then to cybersecurity specialists. We do not pay, so as not to give in to blackmail and because there is no guarantee that we will regain access. "
The importance of passwords
For half a day, the switchboard did not work, but the calls were redirected to other extensions. The mails were accessible, but not the files nor the center of formalities of the companies. The Gironde CCI does not deplore data exfiltration. "Specialists working on system recovery ensure that our firewalls have prevented hackers from seizing them," says CCI. They also explain that the key to security are passwords: never the same, preferably complicated, not kept on the computer, modified regularly… ”Reminder: do not click on a strange attachment or open the email from an unknown correspondent.
The agents of the IT department of the CCI are working to restart the system in order of priority of the files. They update employees' laptops, sifting through every machine.
Sensitive sites are regularly attacked. In Bordeaux, the CHU counts around twenty daily attempts detected by the firewalls.
