SalzburgMilch paralyzed by hackers
24. June 2021

A hacker attack paralyzed the logistics and products in SalzburgMilch.
Cyber attack on Austria's third largest dairy, Salzburgmilch. According to media reports, previously unknown hackers paralyzed the company's IT systems on Wednesday night of this week.
The headquarters in Salzburg-Itzling and the cheese dairy in Lamprechtshausen (Flachgau) are affected by the attack. According to the company, it is a hack of enormous proportions that affects all areas of the company, in particular production and logistics as well as corporate communications. Only the dairy website remained accessible.

Total failure of the IT systems
According to the Austria Press Agency, employees of the dairy were sent home this Thursday, Thursday, due to the total failure. The perpetrators apparently changed all passwords on Tuesday evening, resulting in a total failure of the IT systems. Orders were also no longer possible as a result. Experts are working flat out to repair the damage. According to the Salzburg Regional Police Department, the police have been turned on. The Salzburg State Criminal Police Office is investigating. As ORF-Online suspects, negotiations with the attackers are already running in the background, presumably ransom is being demanded, as was the case recently with the crane manufacturer Palfinger.

Farmers can continue to deliver
According to SalzburgMilch authorized representative Florian Schwap, it has been possible to start an emergency operation so that the milk that has been delivered can be processed again. This means that the milk collection continues to function despite the cyber attack. This means that the farmers can continue to deliver.
The logistics area has not yet been reactivated. Retail partners such as Spar and Rewe (Billa, Adeg) cannot currently be supplied. It has not yet been possible to estimate when deliveries will start up again. The retail chains guarantee that they have enough goods in stock for the next few days. In addition, they are working on solutions to be able to purchase SalzburgMilch products without IT.

Emergency operation over the weekend
As of Friday, June 25th, the damage to the SalzburgMilch IT systems could not be repaired. The dairy has set up an emergency operation in order to be able to process the daily delivery of a million liters of milk. However, logistics and, above all, high-bay warehouses are still at a standstill, says managing director Andreas Gasteiger to the Kronen-Zeitung. The trade cannot be supplied until further notice. Production is to be cut back over the coming weekend. Excess milk is given to other dairies or to drying plants. In any case, the collection from the farmers remains intact.
