Arnoff Moving & Storage customers may have had their data stolen by hackers as part of a breach, the company said.

The company could not say how many customers may have been impacted, how long ago the data may be from, or if the breach was limited to its regional Mid Hudson Valley branches. While the Poughkeepsie-based company serves Dutchess, Orange, Ulster and Putnam counties, it also has offices in the Capital region, western Connecticut and Massachusetts, and Florida, according to its site.

The alleged hackers posted to a website what they claim are examples of the private information stolen, including forms that have names, contact information and credit card numbers.

Daniel Arnoff, the company's vice president, said they are working with the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office and the FBI. They planned to contact customers once they understand the extent of the breach.

"We are aware that some data was released or obtained by hackers. We're still investigating what that all is," Arnoff said.

Representatives from the sheriff's office have not returned Journal inquiries.

The Journal attempted to contact those whose alleged information was posted online; none acknowledged they knew about the breach or would provide comment.

The company became aware of "computer-related" issues on Thursday after which the it was contacted by the alleged hackers. Some of their systems were down for several hours.

"What (the hackers) asked us to do was to follow some instructions and go to a website. Our IT support and the authorities we're working with instructed us not to follow their instructions," Arnoff said.
