Since five in the morning, all the IT services of the Oviedo City Council have been hijacked. A malicious program has blocked access to servers and data and the municipal contractor has been forced to throw away the rest of the media to stop the invasion. It is, as confirmed by municipal sources, a cyber attack with 'ransomware', the same type that the SEPE suffered two months ago. The 'hackers' would have managed to sneak into the City Council servers a program that denies and blocks access to serversand data. To protect the rest of the system, Asac would have been forced to disconnect the rest of the system. The same sources indicate that the attack has had "a limited impact", thanks to this prevention, but the way to regain normalcy may be more complex.
The Oviedo City Council has informed the National Intelligence Center of what happened to seek their collaboration to decrypt the damaged parts of the system and locate the malicious program to eliminate it.
What is called ransomware is a type of cyberattack that manages to place a program on a computer that encrypts data and prevents access to it. On many occasions, hackers ask for a ransom in exchange for the password released by the invaded system. It is one of the most common cyberattacks between companies and public bodies.
