RMIT University has suspended online and in-person classes after suffering an IT outage that one government source has described to the ABC as a significant cyber attack.

In a statement, RMIT said it was working to resolve "some issues" that had affected its IT systems but did not confirm what had caused the problems.

The ABC understands the issues were caused by a phishing scam, where fraudsters attempt to gather sensitive details by presenting themselves as a trustworthy entity via emails or other digital communication.

"From the analysis undertaken to date, which has been independently validated, there is currently no evidence to suggest any data breaches as a result of these issues," the statement said.

RMIT cancelled its online and in-person classes and closed its campuses on Friday, but by the afternoon had announced on-campus classes would resume from Monday for vocational education, the urban school and flight school students, along with higher degree research activities.

"RMIT staff will continue to work remotely, with access to critical systems including Office 365 and Canvas," the updated statement said.

The university's higher education students are not due to return to the campus for semester one until March 2.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre has been contacted for comment.
