Harrisburg University develops facial recognition software to ID criminals, no racial bias

HARRISBURG, Pa. — A group of Harrisburg University professors and a PhD student have developed an automated computer facial recognition software capable of predicting whether someone is likely to be a criminal.

The software is able to predict if someone is a criminal with 80% accuracy and with no racial bias. The prediction is calculated solely based on a picture of their face.

PhD student Jonathan W. Korn, NYPD veteran Prof. Nathaniel J.S. Ashby, and Prof. Roozbeh Sadeghian titled their research “A Deep Neural Network Model to Predict Criminality Using Image Processing.” The entirety of their research will appear in a future book series, titled "Springer Nature - Research Book Series: Transactions on Computational Science & Computational Intelligence."
