The cyber police exposed a resident of Khmelnytskyi region for creating a "virus" to steal user data

The man distributed malicious software under the guise of applications for computer games. In this way, the attacker gained remote access to more than 10,000 computers.
The 25-year-old offender was exposed by the employees of the department for countering cybercrimes of the Khmelnytskyi region together with the investigative department of the regional police and the regional SBU department.
The man developed virus software, which he positioned as applications for computer games. Once on users' devices, the program provided the ability to download and upload files, install and uninstall programs, take screenshots from the remote screen, capture sound from the microphone and video from built-in or external cameras.
Having collected certain data, the attacker processed them to further steal accounts or withdraw electronic funds contained in the balance of such accounts.
Law enforcement officers searched the residence of the suspect and seized equipment used in illegal activities.
It was established that the attacker gained access to more than 10,000 computers.
At the time of the search, almost 600 infected computers were "under control" of the suspect, which he could connect to in real time.
Criminal proceedings have been opened under Part 5 of Art. 361 (Unauthorized interference in the work of information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides from ten to fifteen years of imprisonment. Investigations are ongoing.
Procedural management is carried out by the Khmelnytskyi Regional Prosecutor's Office.
